Abolition of the Death Penalty Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Abrogation of the Death Penalty - Essay Example Methods for the death penalty incorporate however not constrained to; hanging, execution, electric shock, stoning and so forth. Van Den Haag gives five reasons defending the legality of capital punishment by presuming that the constitution considers capital punishment which isn't the situation (van lair witch 128).The constitution expresses that ââ¬Å"if life was to be removed as type of discipline, at that point it must be as per the fair treatment of the lawâ⬠, this suggestion is contingent and accords the legislature a decision to either nullify it or impact it considering the fair treatment of the law. Thus I wish to advance contentions that would prompt the annulment of capital punishment. Contradicting Van cave witch contends that capital punishment goes about as prevention for future homicides. Demise being the most serious type of discipline is most dreaded and a homicide would think before doing his expectation. Past examinations have indicated that tranquil various ki llings were deflected since the presentation of capital punishment. Be that as it may, capital punishment takes calm quite a while before it is controlled and the utilization of option similarly dreaded types of disciplines could be utilized rather as a type of discouragement. Prevention has its confinements as somebody previously detained and condemned for death would not be hesitant to slaughter their detainees just as the jail watches. Capital punishment must be compelling in deflecting murders on the off chance that it is done quick enough which is normally not the situation. Retributive equity becomes an integral factor when a lopsidedness happens in the public arena because of lost life from the hands of a lawbreaker. That equalization must be reestablished by removing the killers life. Agreeing In answer to prevention, capital punishment has not been demonstrated to dissuade future homicides. The distinction between life detainment and capital punishment is irrelevant. Capita l punishment can have the impact of brutalizing the general public, which at that point makes it a less compelling apparatus for deflecting murder as this builds the chance of more homicide (Anckar, 2004, 189). Most killings are submitted by individuals in changed perspectives. It may be that an individual acted in snapshots of massive passionate lopsidedness because of outrage or substance misuse. Likewise, the individual submitting murder doesn't hope to be discovered. It would be get the job done to say that capital punishment can't discourage such people or medication manhandling hoodlums from submitting murder as they are not in a situation to assess the chance of life detainment or capital punishment itself. Capital punishment has not been demonstrated to discourage a bigger number of murders than life detainment, as most detainees serving life detainment are engaged with routine works and like some other detainee, they are probably not going to carry out any wrongdoing. Peopl eââ¬â¢s security can be ensured by offering life sentence without any chance to appeal without utilizing capital punishment (Bae,2007, 235). Long haul detainment being an extreme discipline can dissuade any normal individual from perpetrating murder; anyway this is unimaginable as most planned killings include a criminal who is anticipating not getting captured or individuals who killed out of sheer feeling.. Police in states with capital punishment are undependable contrasted with cops in abolitionist states. Additionally, jail work force and detainees are undependable in states with capital punishment than those without. (Wolftson, 1982, 167) In rejoinder to retaliation, Sanctity of life ought not be undermined to capital punishment. Requital being similar to retribution ought not be practiced by a socialized society. The death penalty has such a large number of issues and dangers related with it and the requirement for retaliation ought not legitimize its reality. Authorizing murdering for retribution intentions brings down the respect of a develop society which is

Teenage pregnancy is a major i... free essay sample
Adolescent pregnancy is a significant issue in the United States. A few people say this is societys deficiency others state that engaging in sexual relations is an individual decision and this prompts pregnancy. I have an inclination that is societys deficiency. Since there are a few things that society can improve to forestall it. Unnecessary high school pregnancy wont be annihilated at everything except it very well may be diminished with a suitable media, more anti-conception medication or new systems to get individuals have contraception, and individuals to give genuine models for little youngsters. Simply turning on the television and adhering to the procedures on any day you can see a wide range of improper media brimming with sexual substance. Aside from the intimate moments in motion pictures, there are shows that opens about youngster pregnancy. Shows like Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant make pregnancy appear to be adequate and cool. Distraught to be on TV a few people make pages on Facebook and posted the best snapshots of the period the interesting scenes and caused them to circulate around the web. We will compose a custom article test on High school pregnancy is a significant I or then again any comparative subject explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page A great deal of Facebook clients get in their psyches that is alright, that is fun going through your time on earth dealing with another kid other than yourself. In the event that having intercourse at youthful ages didnt appear the cool activity, numerous adolescents most likely wouldnt do it. I feel that taking wrong shows and motion pictures shut off and change the points of view we could roll out a positive improvement in our general public. Other arrangement is conception prevention, there are numerous types of contraception. In a great deal of contentions about this theme there is discussion about making condoms been increasingly accessible for youngsters, however I feel that various methods of conception prevention that are progressively viable ought to be advanced. Condoms are essential to utilize, however ordinarily they can break, the person convince the young lady to let him not use it, concoct any rationalization, and in this way they are inadequate. Also, without giving it much thought a condom isn't the main thing that someone thinks while engaging in sexual relations, just mindful youngsters could have the insight of utilizing one however those individuals arent having intercourse during their adolescent years. Along these lines, we can let the young ladies have somewhat more duty since they are the ones that will convey a child in the event that they decide not to accomplish something. For instance, the following day pill which is costly yet viable or conception prevention pills are an economic ally made, increasingly compelling type of anti-conception medication. On the off chance that types of contraception like the pill were less expensive and simpler to get, more teenagers would be secured and less would get pregnant. The world all in all needs great good examples. Anybody that a high schooler gazes upward to should attempt to concentrate on setting a genuine model. In a world loaded with awful models, its particularly critical to set great ones for that individual in his/her developing stage. It very well may be a relative. Society will in general power the most established sibling/sister to set the model however these days I have seen the more youthful sister get pregnant before the most seasoned, which repudiates the possibility of society that the more youthful would do what the most established do. To a limited extent guardians have their slip-ups. They can be excessively exacting so the child/little girl do what is advised not to do just to trouble them, the guardians that let their youngsters do what they need pardoning themselves by saying that they trust them, and the ones that when they got one of their girls confronting pregnancy and afterward they cheerfully would explain their lives and instruct them not to stress. They dont unders tand that the more youthful children are watching this and afterward they would do it, why? Since father or mother would fix it later. All guardians attempt their best and a misstep is reasonable. No one brought into the world realizing that how will generally be a parent. Adolescents need good examples to shield them from succumbing to the weights of todays society, particularly the sexual ones.

Blog Archive MBA News Activist Investors Are Enthralling Business School Students
Blog Archive MBA News Activist Investors Are Enthralling Business School Students A relatively new trend is buzzing within the business school world: activist investors. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), exploring the phenomenon earlier this month, observed that such schools as Columbia Business School and Harvard Business School are introducing more activist investment case studies to the curriculum and inviting investors to speak at the schools in response to studentsâ rapidly spreading interest in this topic. The fascination with activist investors could very well change the course of some MBAsâ careers, as many students who once planned to pursue more traditional types of investing jobs have recently changed direction. A high and rapidly manifesting pay rate is a possible lure for some students, but one recent UCLA Anderson School of Management graduate told the WSJ that making a deeper impact on companies through direct investments could also be a draw. âThereâs definitely excitement around [activist investors] and what they do,â the student, Lance Cannon, said. Yet, some experts say the trend could prove to be a dud because of its fast pace and alleged lack of commitment to the future. âThereâs plenty of evidence to support the view that activism does far more harm than good,â Cornell Law School professor Lynn Stout commented in the article. Despite the criticism, activism appears to be claiming a prominent seat within business schools. âActivism has changed so much about business,â Christopher Crawford, a Columbia Business School second-year student, told the WSJ. âWhether you think itâs constructive or not, itâs not going away.â Share ThisTweet News

Essay on Sociology and Social Power - 827 Words
Part 2: Introducing Sociology People today blame themselves more and more for every bad thing or troubles they have on personal fault rather then looking towards the social issue (Mills 1959, pg.1). In the article The Promise C. Wright Mills say that the individual can understand his own experience and gauge his own fate only by locating himself within his period, that he can know his own chances in life only by becoming aware of those of all individuals in his circumstances (Mills 1959, pg.2). This means that people can understand themselves better if they look past themselves and start looking at in conditions as a whole, not just blaming yourself but seeing that there is a problem in the society and you cannot necessarilyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I have had the experience of rolelessness when I was about 15 and working for my father. He would always be telling me what to do and how to do it and always having someone older help me, even though it wasnt a challenging task for me and would only assign ind ependent tasks if I was as complex as picking up trash. This underestimation of me made me feel as if I was useless and just a burden on him. Coontz then looks past the troubles of one couples marriage fights and into the social relationships that have been created in our society (Coontz 1997, pg.13). Social relationships have to do with situated social power. Situated social power by Coontz definition is, various groups in society have unequal access to economic resources, political power, and social status, and these social differences limit how fair or equal a personal relationship between two individuals from different groups can really be (Coontz 1997 pg13). I have personally experienced situated social power with my dad. He has said to me that I can do whatever I want to do, but that really isnt the case, there is actually only one correct decision and he is feeling like he has put the decision into my hands but I know if I do the decision that he doesnt want me to do there will be consequences. What Is Gibbs Free Energy in Chemistry
In the early days of chemistry, chemists used the term affinity to describe the force responsible for chemical reactions. In the modern era, affinity is called Gibbs free energy. Definition Gibbs free energyà is a measure of the potential for reversible or maximum work that may be done by a system at constant temperature and pressure. It is a thermodynamic property that was defined in 1876 by Josiah Willard Gibbs to predict whether a process will occur spontaneously at constant temperature and pressure. Gibbs free energy G is defined as G H - TS where H, T, and S are the enthalpy, temperature, and entropy. The SI unit for Gibbs energy is the kilojoule. Changes in the Gibbs free energy G correspond to changes in free energy for processes at constant temperature and pressure. The change in Gibbs free energy change is the maximum non-expansion work obtainable under these conditions in a closed system; ÃâG is negative for spontaneous processes, positive for nonspontaneous processes, and zero for processes at equilibrium. Gibbs free energy is also known as (G), Gibbs free energy, Gibbs energy, or Gibbs function. Sometimes the term free enthalpy is used to distinguish it from Helmholtz free energy. The terminology recommended by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is Gibbs energy or Gibbs function. Positive and Negative Free Energy The sign of a Gibbs energy value may be used to determine whether or not a chemical reaction proceeds spontaneously. If the sign for ÃâG is positive, additional energy must be input for the reaction to occur. If the sign for ÃâG is negative, the reaction is thermodynamically favorable and will occur spontaneously. However, just because a reaction occurs spontaneously doesnt mean it occurs quickly. The formation of rust (iron oxide) from iron is spontaneous, yet occurs too slowly to observe. The reaction: C(s)diamondà ââ âà C(s)graphiteà also has a negative ÃâG atà 25à C and 1 atmosphere, yet diamonds do not appear to spontaneously change into graphite.

The Framers Of The Constitution Essay - 1346 Words
Certain interests do not change over time in our society. Over 200 years ago, the prominent concern that led to the framing of the Constitution regarded the establishment of a government that was ââ¬Å"for the people and by the people.â⬠The framers of the Constitution, with concern of an over powering central government in mind, provided a basis for the structure of the federal government of the United States. The powers of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government are laid out strategically in a way that no one branch can have more power than the other. The national concern of maintaining a legitimate government has not shifted since the initial days of the framers. Although the capacity of the government has grown over time, the system of checks and balances that was adapted in the framing of the Constitution allows for the structure and powers of the federal government to remain in order today. Other than providing a structural map for how the gov ernment will operate, however, the additional aspects of the Constitution fail to administer practical framework for addressing 21st century interests. This document was written over 200 years ago and it has not been altered substantially since then (Lazare). Living Dream free essay sample
A five-year-old girl stands alone in a room. Thereââ¬â¢s silence; no one is watching her but me. She climbs atop a bar stool that towers over her head. Thereââ¬â¢s no one to halt her curiosity or tell her to get down. She knows better, but sheââ¬â¢s reckless. With her arms stiff at her sides, she clenches the underside of the high stool, securing her body as she sits perched on top. Her feet are locked in, pushing against the wooden bar beneath and as she throws her body forward; the stool begins to rock back and forth. In a wave-like motion, she leans back as the stool tips forward, riding the chair like a rocking horse. Slowly she picks up pace, tilting forward and back, until the feet of the stool are only touching the ground two at a time. She rocks faster and faster, her eyes locked on the blank TV sitting directly ahead as it rhythmically gets closer then farther away. I watch as she is thrown from the stool, flying forward into the lifeless television, like a cowboy bucked from a bronco. The stool topples to the ground with a loud crash and as her forehead hits the screen, both the girl and the television join the stool on the floor. She lays delirious and gushing blood as the mother shrieks in terror and the girlââ¬â¢s sister is told to get towels, blankets, anything to keep the blood in. The little girl wonââ¬â¢t remember much of the ordeal from this point but I can tell her what I saw. Her limp body is swaddled in a colorful towel and her head in another, as if dressed in a sari and turban. She is carried out the door in chaos when a horrified neighbor offers to help. The small bundle is handed over to the neighbor, a plump Mexican woman smelling strongly of perfume and smoke, and the three pack into the familyââ¬â¢s car. I manage to slip into the back seat, sitting next to the fat lady and the girl, watching the towels grow redder. The childââ¬â¢s eyes are closed all the way to the hospital; the car ride is tense and silent. We rush into the emergency room and the child is taken into a small dark room. She is laid on a table and a bright light shines down over her face. The family and I watch, grimacing, as the surgeon sows up the hole, stitching seven plastic threads through the girlââ¬â¢s right eyebrow. The next morning I awake, thinking of the girl and remembering as I watched her fly from the bar stool and land in a pool of blood. I lay back on my pillow, distraught, and rub my tired eyes. I feel something odd above one eye and I pause ââ¬â tracing my finger over a long, straight scar sticking through my eyebrow. The memories come rushing back and I realize Iââ¬â¢ve had the dream again. A dream Iââ¬â¢ve been having for thirteen years, yet Iââ¬â¢m never the little girl.

Crocodiles Essays (170 words) - Crocodylidae, Alcelaphinae
Crocodiles The crocodiles seem to know a herd of wildebeest has arrived before anyone else does. The most ferocious group of crocodiles is in line along the shore awaiting a chance to capture one of the wildebeest. After a series of weeks, the seasonal river shrinks into a series of pools. This makes it even harder for animals to get something to drink without getting attacked by a crocodile, some of which are eighteen feet, weigh almost a ton, and can move at extremely deadly speeds. On top of this, the crocodiles will eat anything they can catch. The crocodile is a cold-blooded reptile with a very slow metabolism; therefore, they can last six months or longer without eating. Many of the crocodiles only eat when these herds come. The herds are easier targets because many of the wildebeest, especially calves, have never seen a crocodile before. The impalas, baboons, and warthogs that live there year-round have learned when and when not to approach the river. The crocodiles' annual feast on the unexpecting wildebeest in the Grumeti River has proven these crocodiles to be very strong and deadly. Science

Self-directed work teams are defined as a small number of people with complementary skills, who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach, for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. (Katzenbach & Smith,2001). Collaborative self directed work teams can get complex projects done at faster rates than the traditional boss-worker arrangement, because the decision making process is made faster and more effective in a team. Empowering teams to make decisions about their work also enhances satisfaction and reduces turnover. (Berger, 1998). Self directed work teams involve employees in a specific area, or those who are working on a specific product or process. Self directed work teams can be any size, but are generally not more than 12 to 15 employees. The work team makes the decisions that would normally be made by a supervisor or manger, and might interact with the companyââ¬â¢s suppliers and customers, whether they are inside or outside the company. In some companies, self-directed work teams will also take over many of the human resource functions as well (Cotton, 2003). Self directed work teams have also become one of the more changing approaches to employee involvement and has been increasing in popularity within the last several years. Companies such as Proctor & Gamble, Digital Equipment, General Mills, Federal Express and other well known companies are reorganizing their employees into self directed work teams. In a recent survey, 476 Fortune 500 companies found that although only 7% of the work force is organized into self directed work teams, management at half of these companies said that they will be relying on them more in years ahead. A Comparison of Fertility Rates Between China and Niger Essay
A Comparison of Fertility Rates Between China and Niger - Essay Example Flags of China and Niger ââ¬ËTotal fertility rateââ¬â¢ is the measurement most widely used by demographers to measure fertility (Jones, 2004: 98). It indicates the average number of children that would be born to 1,000 women of childbearing age. Chinaââ¬â¢s current birth rate stands at 1.54 children per woman (CIA World Fact Book, 2011), and is currently 188th out of 230 countries on the CIAââ¬â¢s Total Fertility Rate List (2011). There are cities/ provinces within China such as Hong Kong and Macau that have the current lowest fertility rates in the world at 1.04 and 0.91 children per woman respectively. Chinaââ¬â¢s current population stands at 1.3 billion, but their population growth rate of 0.493%, is amongst the lowest in the world. There are currently only 12.29 births per 1,000 women. Chinaââ¬â¢s fertility rate of below 2 children therefore indicates that its population is falling below replacement level. According to the CIA World Fact Book (2011), Nigerââ¬â ¢s birth rate stands at 7.6 children per woman, which makes it the country with the highest birth rate in the world. Its current fertility rate is 50.54 births per 1,000 of the total population. Opportunities for Company Essay Example for Free
Opportunities for Company Essay Opportunities for Company Q to lead in the area of social responsibility Company Qââ¬â¢s attitude towards social responsibility appears to be nonexistent, possibly through ignorance or disconcert. Either way the lack of social responsibility affects their business and communityââ¬â¢s perception of their business. It appears that the company management has never developed and ethics program that clearly defines the corporate culture including provisions for social responsibility. Profits, or at least a lack of losses appears to be a primary motivating factor for company Qs managementââ¬â¢s decisions. Company Q has been attempting to cut losses by closing stores that were losing money instead of finding innovative ways to increase revenues and profitability for the stores. Based on the known information, Company Q still has ample opportunity to build a socially responsible reputation within the community it serves and at the same time create profits for its shareholders. Simple and cost-effective changes could be implemented in a relatively short amount of time and the benefits to the community, employees and the company itself could be realized within a reasonable amount of time. There are at least three ways that Company Q can make a positive affect within the community that it serves while increasing revenues and profitability for shareholders. First area of improvement: Take those previous customer requests for health conscience and organic products and turn them into reality within their stores. For many years, Company Qs customers have been requesting health conscience and organic products sold at Company Qââ¬â¢s stores. The companys efforts to provide this for its customers have been weak at best. The companys management has the ethical duty to be positively reactive to its customers requests, so long as those requests are not illegal, immoral, irresponsible or unethical. Since requests are for products that benefit the health of customers, company Q needs to act to deliver those requested products in a manner that is consistent with its goals of profitability. In this case, the company has the ability to show social responsibility in bringing healthier products into its stores and have the added benefit that these items are high-margin, delivering profit opportunities to company shareholders. Because the items are high-margin, the costs of purchasing a reasonable supply and variety of items is relatively low as compared to lower margin items that are mostà likely currently stocked in each store. The company even has an opportunity to reduce costs in the stores purchases by eliminating similar products that are lower in margin to the ones that they will be bringing in based on customer requests. Promotion of the social responsibility plan is important. With no additional cost in advertising, company Q can promote these new healthy products in its ad vertising. Doing so can bring back some of their lost business as well as bring in new customers to the stores. This situation is a win not only for Company Q but is also a win for customers and employees. The additional profits from higher-margin items will assist the company in creating wages that are appropriate for each position and opportunities for advancement in pay and position for its employees. This can help create an atmosphere that retains employees and reduces turnover, consequently, reducing the costs of obtaining and training new employees on a regular basis. Second area of improvement: Donations to local food banks, shelters and other charities Company Q experiences a direct loss of not only the potential profit from but the actual cost of day-old items that are thrown away. In doing so, the company experiences these costs with no benefit to the company. This method of handling the old items not only costs the company dollars in loss but also does not allow the company to reap the benefits of a socially responsible positive image to its customers and employees. Company Qââ¬â¢s management has taken the approach that by donating the day-old items it leaves the possibility for employees to steal from the company. A thorough plan of documentation for the donation process will help in ensuring that the donations go where they are intended and minimize risk of employee theft. One part of this plan would be to have the food bank pick up the donated items on a daily or weekly basis. As part of the donation process the food bank employee and the store employee would sign an inventory of the items picked up. This inventory tracking could be used by the stores as proof for prospective tax deductible donation on federal and/or state taxes. Any legal reductions in tax liability, improves profitability for the company. Company Q can benefit with a more socially responsible image to its customers and employees each time the food bank truck pulls up to the store and is being loaded with donated food. Food banks are not the only opportunity to show company philanthropy to the community. Making donations and collecting donations from the community forà homeless shelters and other worthy charitable organizations is yet another avenue to show the community that Company Q is active in social responsibility. Shelters and other charitable organizations are in need of items that the stores may not be able to sell to their customers for donation, but when customers and employees bring in donated items such as clothing, personal appliances and possibly furniture, these items could be collected at or near the store and be picked up by these charitable organizations. This gives the store an opportunity to receive business from those that are dropping off donations, by going in to the store and purchasing items that they may need for themselves and do it in one simple trip. These type of donation events can be listed in their existing advertising and give customers another reason to come by the store. Third area of improvement: Create opportunities for employees as well as customers to share in the charitable activities that promote social responsibility. As part of its change in being more socially responsible, Company Q could directly involve its customers by making donation bins available in stores for customers to purchase items and donate to the food bank. Advertising this in the store is good, but including it in their existing ad campaign could bring in customers that appreciate socially responsible businesses. Not only is this the sale of the items additional revenue for Company Q, but it allows customers to be directly involved in donation, which in turn creates even more goodwill for Company Q. In addition to customer involvement, employees can be directly involved in developing a socially responsible image of the company. Company Q could organize and promote employees assisting at food bank locations. These employees could go in for one day each month or each quarter and work within the food bank in one of many areas that the food bank needs physical labor for. Company Q could pay the employees their regular wages and be may able to take tax deductions for the wages paid to employees while assisting the food bank. This approach is another win for all parties involved. The food bank wins with donated labor, the employees win by being paid for the time worked at the food bank and Company Q wins by showing social responsibility in its community and gaining goodwill for itself in the process. In conclusion, Company Q can develop an ethics program and implement a plan for social responsibility that helps those within its community and increase its revenue and profitsà in doing so.

In The Camps Essay examples -- essays research papers fc
In the Camps Concentration camp is a term that stirs up many emotions. How did they come about? What were they exactly? And just what went on inside those walls? Many have tried to give a full description of what life in the camps was like. With toadyââ¬â¢s fast moving and knowledgeable media the public has become very informed on the subject at hand. The fact still remains that few were there, so few can know what really happened. These three poignant questions posed above could each take eternity to fully understand. This is a short explanation of the atrocities that the Naziââ¬â¢s handed out to the innocent victims of the Holocaust. à à à à à How exactly did concentration and extermination camps come about, legally speaking? On first glance it seems that in toadyââ¬â¢s modern and civil world that nothing of this nature could ever happen. In fact it happened due to article 48, paragraph 2 in the German Constitution. Here the president is given far reaching emergency powers. This article was used by Paul von Hindenburg in 1933 giving protective custody to protect the stateââ¬â¢s security. From there in momentum gained. On April 12, 1934 an edict from the Ministry of the Interior was introduced governing protective custody grounds for establishment of camps. Harry Potter & the Commodity Fetishism
Amalia Rodrigues Film Survey Prompt 1 Harry Potter & the Commodity Fetishism There are few things in this world that manage to seep into every crevice our lives as humans; the air we breathe, the people we interact with, and in our contemporary culture, the buying and selling of commodities. The masses have adopted a ââ¬Å"give the people what they wantâ⬠attitude that results in the commodification of everything thinkable. ââ¬Å"Even as a negation of that social purposiveness which is spreading through the market, [artââ¬â¢s] freedom remains essentially bound up with the premise of a commodity economyâ⬠(Adorno & Horkheimer 1238).There may have been a time when art was an escape from the domination of commerce, when people created things motivated by passion and emotion rather than by the prospect of dollar signs; no longer does that time exist. In film, the studio system has become a monopoly, and the structure of films, a formula. Though some would argue that there are a myriad of genres that give variety to the industry, Adorno and Horkheimer would counter that a menu is still not a choice, and that the monopolization of the film industry takes away from a world of choices and freedoms. The industry has morphed into a total administration of art, undoubtedly integrating our pleasure in the theater with the machinery of global media firms. A textbook example is the franchise of the Harry Potter films, which more than most any series of films, proliferates the sins of hyper commercialism. A commodity is defined as something that has use value, or utility, by satisfying a particular need or desire, created to be exchanged for a profit. It must have some sort of utility, or it will not be desired by a prospective buyer. ââ¬Å"So far as it is a value in use, there is nothing mysterious about it, whether we consider it from the point of view that by its properties it is capable of satisfying human wants, or from the point that those properties are t he product of human laborâ⬠(Marx 1). This could be virtually anything, being that everything today has a price put on it by society. We are constructed through our relationship with and use of commodities in our everyday lives. As a people, we have become obsessed with the commodities we surround ourselves with, constructing our identities through the material goods that inhabit us. Commodity fetishism replaces relationships between people with relationships between humans and objects. The eruption of the Harry Potter phenomenon occurred in the late nineties and has only flourished since. The author of the series, J. K. Rowling, created a world that nobody had seen before, a world of magic. This world, along with the lovable characters involved, are what our society seamlessly bought into. The masses fell in love with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, leaving them vulnerable to the impending commercial goods that the media conglomerates would soon overwhelmingly develop. And, no doubt, the Potter-inspired merchandise began to flow like lava as the movies were produced one by one, each one more successful than the next. Mindlessly, readers and viewers were sucked in by the new world of witchcraft and wizardry that leaves ceaseless possibilities for immense revenue. To quote Adorno and Horkheimer, ââ¬Å"The culture perpetually cheats its consumers of what it perpetually promises. The promissory note which, with its plots and staging, it draws on pleasure is endlessly prolonged; the promise, which is actually all the spectacle consists of, is illusory: all it actually confirms is that the real point will never be reached, that the diner must be satisfied with the menuâ⬠(Adorno & Horkheimer 1230). When adopting the premise of Harry Potter from words in a book to the big motion-picture screen, the film makers undoubtedly had dollar signs flashing in their pupils.Such a fantastically huge foundation was built and the only direction to move was up. Before Harry cou ld say ââ¬Å"abracadabraâ⬠(or something to that effect) stores began to overflow with anything and everything with the name ââ¬Å"Harry Potterâ⬠plastered on the side. Hats, mugs, T-shirts, video games, costumes, the signature round glasses, not one item from the series has gone unnoticed by the conglomerates who are so devoted to squeezing every ounce of profit out of poor Harryââ¬â¢s wand.Even the earwax jellybeans that Dumbledore so foolishly consumes out of his bag of ââ¬Å"Bertie Bottââ¬â¢s Every Flavor Beansâ⬠are readily available at your local superstore. There is simply no escaping the pure immensity that is the Potter revolution. Children are hosting Harry Potter themed birthday parties, adults are tattooing the dark mark on their bodies, college students are starting quidditch teams and tournaments, and families are taking road trips to the newly developed ââ¬Å"Harry Potter Worldâ⬠in Universal Studios. This latest installment of the Harry P otter craze allows fans to live in the world they see on screen, drink butter beer, and purchase wands from Olivanderââ¬â¢s; all of this for the low, low price of a hefty wad of cash straight into the pockets of the already multi-billion dollar industry. And yet, somehow our society does not mind being conned into purchasing such unnecessary yet desirable items, directly depicting the idea of commodity fetishism. Massive consumerism based on obsessions drawn from movies and franchises such as Harry Potter happen day to day, year to year, generation to generation. It has become so naturalized in our society to buy into our every impulse of consumer products that we cannot help but be blinded by our desires for such vain items. In a way, we, as consumers, are being exploited similarly to the way that house elves like Dobby are exploited in the Harry Potter series. We are born into our exploitation, and in some ways seem to enjoy it, as the elves seem to enjoy their dirty work. As a population, we can only hope to be as lucky as Dobby, to find a sock in an old diary, and be set free from manipulation.

Media Controls Your Mind - 837 Words
Media has an affect on the popular culture more than most people think. It is simply everywhere you go and unavoidable. So either way you look at it, the mass media occurs in a personââ¬â¢s life on a daily basis. Which has a severe effect on the choices you make and the morals you live by. One cannot trust everything they see on TV either. Most commercials you would see today are overly exaggerated just to persuade consumers into buying the product. For example, in the 1930ââ¬â¢s Americaââ¬â¢s first ââ¬Å"drug czarâ⬠Harry J. Anslinger, began one of the worldââ¬â¢s greatest public relations campaigns just to demoralize marijuana by telling apparent lies to society and persuading them to believe it. Such as that marijuana is more harmful to the body thanâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Using the devilââ¬â¢s image to promote anti-marijuana beliefs in a mostly Christian denominated country, it is bound to turn heads and make people question it. With all this being said, choosing one side is mainly based on you and your families morals and what you believe in. But we can all agree that the media should have the obligation in to telling us truthful information and not far-fetched claims. Living in the 1930ââ¬â¢s, television was very new, and people that actually owned a television set believed almost everything they saw on it. So whatever the advertisements were promoting, it could easily persuade someone into believing their claim. The lack of technology that society had at the time made people a lot more gullible then today. Maybe the mass media did not realize that what is shown to the popular culture on a daily basis could be so influential no matter how untruthful the advertisements might be. It is not fair for the government to know more information than society. So to be able to instill truthfulness the mass media cannot promote exaggerated claims like the one I mentioned earlier. The Crucible By Arthur Miller - 834 Words
Introduction: Arthur Miller has created John Proctor the protagonist of The Crucible to be a 30 year old farmer in Salem, Massachusetts, powerful of body, even-tempered and not easily led. John speaks his mind when he recognizes injustice. He is highly respected, even feared, by some in Salem. His name is synonymous with honour and integrity. He takes pleasure in exposing hypocrisy and is respected for it. However John is a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time but against his own vision of decent conduct, he has come to regard himself as a kind of fraud. After admitting to lechery, John is accused of witchcraft, on this charge he is condemned. Monologue: The walls close in around me. I cannot not escape the endless, darkened walls of this cell. I sit in the corner, I see the sharp corners at each edge of the room. The dismal paint on each of the walls carries a burden of memories where men and women drawing closer and closer to their death had been scraping at the walls. Looking up from the corner of the cell, I see the light coming down from the window, it is the only hope and light that is left in this retched room in which they have confined me. These past months the nights have been long and cold, the days lonely and sad. But the choice is this, confess or hang. It is my word they want, and they will come for me soon. Cloning6 Essay Example For Students
Cloning6 Essay Twenty years from now, as you are walking around the square in Wilkes Barre, you pass someone who looks exactly like you. They have your same brown eyes, round face, light brown hair, short stature, and even the same dimples you possess. Can you imagine the shock and even fright that may accompany such a sighting? The world was bewildered when the news that an adult mammal was produced without any eggs being fertilized with sperm. The results of Dolly surprised society and the idea that human cloning was possible created an uproar. Many people disagree with cloning for ethical reasons. Opponents want human cloning banned, saying it would only create problems. On the other hand, scientists say it could have other benefits such as duplicating embryos for in vitro and replacing a dying child (Masci 1). Others argue that human cloning would open doors for treatments of serious diseases. Cloning human beings could be beneficial, says Ruth Macklin, a professor of bioethics at the Albert Ei nstein College of Medicine in New York City (Masci 2). One way in which cloning could be beneficial in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. Cloning Research may improve IVF, in which an egg is removed from a womans uterus, fertilized by a donated sperm, and then implanted into the uterus. Cloning could improve the effectiveness of IVF. Robert Stillman, one of the investigators in a recent cloning experiment, stated, If a woman has only a single egg to be fertilized, the chances of a successful pregnancy are only about ten percent. He continues, If more then four embryos are implanted, the success rates rise dramatically (Stillman 1993). Cloning embryos could split one embryo into four and then increase the pregnancy rate for many women across the world. Splitting the embryos would avoid the procedure having to be done numerous times. It would reduce the physical risks as well as financial costs. Cloning may also offer new options for couples who are unable to produce children t he normal egg-sperm way. If the couple doesnt want to use a surrogate mother or father, cloning gives the option of still having a child. However, the child would be an exact replica of one of the parents. Cloning could bring hope into many couples lives. Another possible use might involve cloning a son or daughter. This use of cloning could help couples too old to produce their own children. It can also help couples who have lost a child to a murder or kidnapping. Producing a child who is identical to their past might relieve some of the pain. In addition to aiding in reproduction, cloning might help find treatments for certain diseases. Studying how the cells work could lead scientists in the right direction. Some cells in the human body can only perform a certain function. If there were a need for that type of cell, scientists would be able to clone it so it will then perform its function that may be needed in the body. Learning how cells perform different functions can lead to d iscovering effective treatments for diseases such as cancer. Learning how cells work can also provide scientists with the knowledge of how tissues form. Cloning could form these tissues which would aid in transplants. Cloning tissues, organs, and even bone marrow could increase the success rate in surgery. All of these examples could be beneficial; however, many scientists still think cloning will cause problems. Wilmut, the scientist who cloned Dolly the sheep, feels that social and ethical arguments still outweigh the scientific benefits (Masci 3). Many researchers believe that there are other ways then cloning to find treatments for diseases and to provide strength in transplants. I cant at the moment honestly see anything in this (cloning) that is going to tell us something about humans that we cant find out in experimentally more acceptable animals like mice and sheep, says Collin Stewart, Director of the Laboratory for Cancer Developmental Biology at the governments Advanced Biosciences Laboratories in Fredrick, Maryland. .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .postImageUrl , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:hover , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:visited , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:active { border:0!important; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:active , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Crucible: The Lady Of Shalott EssayMany of the arguments by people who disagree with cloning point to the lack of data about its effects. There are many views on him that show him In a good light and some that how him in a bad light. There are some that saw that he was shallow and didnt show great religious passions for the man who came to America to bring about religious tolerance. While others say that he was an exemplar of the personal character and civic virtue that are too often missing in todays world. Even after all of these opinions his actions showed that he wanted to live a good life through good works and making other peoples lives better. Throughout Franklins life he did a lot of compromising, the one thing that he would not compromise on was his aversion to tyranny. These beliefs made him become a founding father for his views on English taxes and other things. Freedom of expression is one of the basic rights that Americans have, in fact it is in the First Amendment.Benjamin Franklin strongly believed in the importance of freedom of expression. Not only was it important to be able to living in a society that wasnt always monitored and controlling but it go rid of tyranny. He said that if there was tyranny then there is no freedom of expression. When he first opened up his own paper, the Pennsylvania Gazette, he realized that there wouldnt be any need for a paper if people didnt have their own opinions because everybody would be say peoples opinions but at the same time it was his responsibility to not let things be published that can do real damage to a person. When he was a candidate in the 1764 Pennsylvania Assembly election there was some very nasty articles and pamphlets miming out about his life. This is to be expected during an election but these were the most brutal things said during any election, and yet Franklin didnt even thinking about taking an action towards them because he saw that they were Just voicing their opinions and it wasnt his Job to take away their right of expression. To us this right is sometimes taken for granted because weve always had it but for Franklin it was extremely important. Caisson said democracy was build on a fo undation of unbridled free speech. This is very true because without this freedom of speech a necromancy would be very hard. Franklin was a man who understood people and their ways of thinking a lot better than most give him credit for. Human being never want to see the flaws in themselves. This is why when you tell someone something that they arent going to like you either have to come right out and say it or you have to disguise it as something else, usually something funny. Franklin was very good at this. He used fake characters a lot of time to tell his opinions and show his intentions. Another tactic he used was hoaxes he wrote a hoax called, The Speech of Poly Baker. This as about a young woman who was being put on trial for having her 5th illegitimate child and she told about what happened to her that made her the way she was, and after she was acquitted she married a Judge a day later. This is Just one example of the things that Franklin did to get the messages across to society. Franklin saw that using humor was the best way to make political points. He also saw that America would always be strongest when it was confident enough and self-aware enough, to laugh at itself. In this essay it also talked about Franklins views on humility and how he found nullity to be very useful throughout his life.He believes that one can never have too much humility because if you have too much than that can cause you to be proud of the humility you have and will cause you to start all over in your need to be more humble. I believe that this is true. Having humility can help in all aspects of life, if you arent going on about your own accomplishments in life and let the person you are talking to tell you all about their accomplishments it will make them feel like you are a great friend and in turn will want to do more for you. Franklin used this tactic when e wanted to launch the first subscription lending library in America. He used his club Junta to do this, during the clubs existence he always thought it best to hear everyones point of view so when he came up with this idea he began to put it into everyones head to it seemed like their own idea and it worked. To many this seems like a sort of manipulation but this is the way people think. If you want something that requires the help of others making them feel like they came up with the idea by themselves will only help your case, and in time the truth will come out of who really amen up with the idea. From England Franklin went to France to try and get them on our side of the war.In order to do this he used a couple of tactics. The fist being the calculations of national interests and the second being he wanted them to see America as exceptional and unique. He began by publishing documents from America to try and win over the hearts of all of the French people. He echoed many great writers in order to do so. Franklin also thought his appearance was a very important part of this process. He made sure to wear his powdered wig and formal dress instead of the fur cap he got room Canada. This style helped the people see the person that they imagined he would be from his background. All of these factors worked too, and he decided to stick with them even after the treaty had been signed. Many believed that Franklin never had the background as a printers foreman because of the status he had achieved in Europe. Benjamin Franklin saw the importance of the balance between idealism and realism. Without these two ideas combining the treaty with France may never have come about. Compromise is the key to success in any area where there are two sides. Franklin saw hat compromise would be a necessary step during the Constitutional Convention if America was going to come about with everybody happy. In fact the motto that he lived a lot of this life by was, Both sides must part with some of their demands. He used this motto because you need to have a win-win situation with people otherwise it will only cause more problems in the future. Even though he didnt completely agree with the compromise about representation that was made a the Constitutional Convention he saw its importance from a political stand point and from a moral stand point. Caisson said it wonderfully when he said, Tolerance, humility and a respect for other required it. As it stated in the essay that American religious tolerance was not born with it but they had to acquire it. Franklin saw the needs of each of the different religious. After leaving the Puritan Boston for Philadelphia he began to see all the different religious together in one city and not fighting over anything and embracing the idea of religious tolerance. Franklin wrote parodies about the Puritans who had a great amount of intolerance to make people see how silly they were being about believing hat there could be different religions being in the same city.During the July 4th celebration one year he was too sick to leave his bed and so the parade came right underneath his window where he could see all the different religious leaders walking together in peace. When he died every clergyman of the city accompanied his casket, which was exactly what he would have wanted. Benjamin Franklin went to great lengths to make this country what he thought it should be. He used his ideas of tyranny and freedom of expression to help bring about democracy. In addition to that he used his humor and humility to help people e the mistakes that they were making.
